Coping with Acne

Acne is a condition that affects most people at some point in their lives. Though acne can be embarrassing and even painful, it generally isn't serious and tends to clear up on its own. Of course, some cases of acne require prescription medication.

If you're suffering from acne, don't worry. There are some steps you can take to help your skin heal quickly:

  • Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face. Harsh scrubs, masks and astringents can irritate your skin and can actually make acne worse.
  • Use a drying lotion. Lotions that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help dry acne and promote healing.
  • Avoid irritating products. Some cosmetics, styling products, lotions and more can irritate the skin. Use only products that are water-based or that are labeled noncomedogenic, meaning they won't clog your pores.
  • Avoid touching your face, and try to keep your hair off of your face.
  • Don't pick at your skin or squeeze your blemishes. This can cause scarring.
